Voices Unheard with Alaina Young
July 28 • 7:00pm
In her own words: “Plus-size, full-figured, curvaceous...I am a fat woman.” While consistently trying to improve her health by way of exercise and healthy eating, Alaina continues to struggle with her weight and the toll it takes on her mental health. Jessica Samuels will discuss with Alaina the impact of modern society’s perceptions of her body type and others of her size, and how larger people are viewed in a world of Insta-models. The true take-away of this episode is a message of hope and body acceptance, and how someone’s size doesn’t make them less human -- no matter what that size is.
Voices Unheard is a weekly series designed to elevate voices and bring greater awareness to underrepresented members of society, including people of various racial backgrounds, sexuality, gender identity/expression, age, and ability. Voices Unheard is produced by Rebellious Unicorns Production Company Inc. and airs on Unicorns.LIVE in partnership with Kelowna Pride Society.
Host Jessica Samuels will engage a different guest each week in a candid conversation about the challenges they have faced or continue to struggle with, giving them a space to share their experiences and helping them to tell their stories.
Voices Unheard will be available via live stream at Unicorns.LIVE. Episodes will be available to stream for Unicorns.LIVE subscribers after the live broadcast.

About the Artist
Brandon (he/him/his) music spans a wide range of musical genres including Blues, Jazz, Rock, Pop, Soul, Punk, Grunge, and even Ragtime Saloon Piano. Around the age of 3, he began to pick out the notes from songs he had heard, on an old toy piano that was given to him. He continued to be fascinated with music, and pianos, eventually prompting his family to bring home a large antique upright piano for him to play on. Brandon finally gained the confidence to come out as gay to his family in 2017, and was fortunate to receive acceptance, and support. Brandon is also diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, a high-functioning form of autism, does not read sheet music, and plays piano entirely by ear, and emotion.
