Mariya Stokes Brings Award-Winning Pop/Country to QUSIC on September 30

Kelowna, BC - The Alberta Country Music Association’s 2019 Female Artist of the year, Mariya Stokes, has joined the growing family of LGBT2Q+ artists appearing on QUSIC.  The original series, which airs on the streaming service Unicorns.LIVE, showcases the work of LGBT2Q+ musical artists, and welcomes Mariya Stokes to the Friends of Dorothy stage on Wednesday, September 30, 2020 at 7:00 pm (PST). A small audience will be in attendance and the live-stream will be available to home viewers at no charge on Unicorns.LIVE ( 


Mariya Stokes (she/her) grew up in Stavely, Alberta and by eight years old she was sneaking into her parents' small-town bar on Friday afternoons to sing with the local jam band.  She has pursued music ever since with a heavy focus on songwriting. Stokes was named the Country Music Alberta 2019 Female Artist of the Year. Her debut single, "Hands on My Body", was released in February 2019, and is a simple, sexy anthem that blurs the lines between country and pop and was he #1 Most Active Indie at Canadian Radio the week of its release. Her follow-up single, "Christmas, Arizona," was released in November 2019, and will be followed by her third single which will be released October 2nd 2020.


In 2019, Stokes opened for RuPaul's Drag Race superstar Trixie Mattel and Canadian pop sweetheart Jocelyn Alice in Calgary, Alberta. She was selected to work with Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame Inductee Terri Clark at National Music Centre in Calgary, Alberta during her RBC Masters in Residence Program.

This episode of QUSIC will be presented free of charge for the in-studio performance, with the live stream free to watch on Unicorns.LIVE ( Anyone wishing to attend the show at Friends of Dorothy Lounge may do so on a first-come, first-served basis; tables can be reserved by calling 236.420.4565 or by emailing Friends of Dorothy Lounge at Adhering to Phase III guidelines in BC’s Restart Plan, tables are available in groups of 2, 4, or 6 to help ensure appropriate social distancing. Friends of Dorothy Lounge continues to provide a safe, healthy environment for both staff and patrons. A minimum $10 donation to  Etcetera Youth Group is requested for those who wish to attend, in lieu of purchasing tickets.

QUSIC is a new LGBT2Q+ Artist Music Series in which all presenting artists identify under the LGBT2Q+ spectrum. This innovative series celebrates the LGBT2Q+ community, which includes individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and two-spirit as well as a range of other gender and sexual identities. QUSIC features solo performers, duos or group acts, provided that the majority of the band and the headlining artist identifies as LGBTQ2+.
