Unicorns.LIVE Brings Holiday Musical Cheer with A QUSIC Christmas on December 16

Kelowna, BC - Rebellious Unicorns Production Company Inc. (RUPC) and Unicorns.LIVE are pleased to announce a special ‘bonus’ episode of the series, QUSIC on Wednesday, December 16, 2020 at 7:00 pm (PST). A QUSIC Christmas will be broadcast live from Friends of Dorothy Lounge and will feature performances by three Okanagan-based LGBT2Q+ musicians, all presenting some of their favourite Holiday Season tunes to wrap up the first season of QUSIC

The artists slated to appear on A QUSIC Christmas are: Jillian (she/her), an accomplished and talented karaoke artist who has appeared on stages across Canada; Brandon Schmor (he/him) pianist and vocalist from Vernon BC, who performs a wide range of musical genres including Blues, Jazz, Rock, Pop, Soul, Punk, Grunge and is also diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome; and Bex (she/her) a Kelowna singer-songwriter whose sound embodies an intuitive balance of effortless, breezy dream folk with ballad-like moments of soul stirring vibrato, and comprises half of the duo, Josh + Bex.

QUSIC is a Unicorns.LIVE original series that showcases the work of LGBT2Q+ musical artists. The series debuted in May 2020, airing on the new streaming platform Unicorns.LIVE every second Wednesday through mid-November 2020, featuring live performances by LGBT2Q+ artists over two 30-45 minute musical sets. During its regular first season run, the show also included a live interview with the artists prior to the performances during which the musicians opened up about their experiences as LGBT2Q+ people in the music business.  QUSIC presented a paid opportunity to performers during a time when the ability to secure live gigs was nearly impossible.

“We are incredibly proud of the work we did with QUSIC this year,” states Rebellious Unicorns and Unicorns.LIVE Executive Producer, Dustyn Baulkham. “Considering we were in the middle of a pandemic, the show exceeded our expectations.” Baulkham continues, “A QUSIC Christmas will be a warm, socially-admits that the production company was fortunate to be able to include small live audiences prior to the ban on public gatherings. “Having an audience was a special treat for the musicians,” continues Baulkham.

About the Performers

Jillian (she/her) has always loved to sing, whether it’s the thrill of performing in front of a crowd or the simple joy of belting it out during a session of ‘car karaoke’. Her parents raised her with a love of music ranging from folk to broadway, and everything in between. She has been on karaoke stages across Canada, as well as competed in several competitions throughout the past ten years. Jillian moved from the prairies to Kelowna in July 2018, and immediately started making herself a friendly face and helping with many LGBT2Q+ events. Since moving here, she has had the absolute pleasure to sing with Femme Fatale at a Kamloops show and as part of two local drag shows, one in Kamloops and one in Vernon.

Brandon Schmor (he/him) is a 25 year old self-taught pianist and vocalist from Vernon BC, who enjoys performing both covers, and his own original songs, spanning a wide range of musical genres including Blues, Jazz, Rock, Pop, Soul, Punk, Grunge, and even Ragtime Saloon Piano. Around the age of 3, he began to pick out the notes from songs he had heard, on an old toy piano that was given to him. He continued to be fascinated with music, and pianos, eventually prompting his family to bring home a large antique upright piano for him to play on. Brandon finally gained the confidence to come out as gay to his family in 2017, and was fortunate to receive acceptance, and support. Brandon is also diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, a high-functioning form of autism, does not read sheet music, and plays piano entirely by ear, and emotion.

Bex (she/her) is a Kelowna singer-songwriter who grew up performing throughout the Okanagan. Starting at the age of five years old, she thrived at musical theatre and classical voice training. Bex’ sound embodies an intuitive balance of effortless, breezy dream folk with ballad-like moments of soul stirring vibrato; a juxtaposition sparked by a space of vulnerability and groundedness. Through her live performance she strives to capture her most authentic and uninhibited side, drawing audiences in with weaves of storytelling.

Since 2014 she has been most recognized for her musical collaborations with OK Sister (post-modern feminist pop/rock), and most recently with, Josh + Bex (dreamy alt-folk). As a solo musician, Bex is currently performing her most recent work—a solo Indie folk EP Collisions with Jupiter, set to hit the studio next year. Earlier this year, she released a piano series of recovery songs, Set Fire and All That There Is. Her newly recorded single, Call it Broke, is set to be released on all streaming platforms in April of 2021.
