MEDIA RELEASE: Popular 2SLGBTQ+ Networking Event Expands to Victoria - Rebellious Unicorns

Victoria - Rebellious Unicorns Production Company, along with Friends of Dorothy Lounge, are proud to bring to Victoria our popular 2SLGBTQ+ networking event —the MX. (pronounced mix) The inaugural event of the season begins April 13th at 5 pm. Following that, the MX. will run the second Wednesday of every month at Friends of Dorothy Lounge Victoria!

The MX. was created as an opportunity for the 2SLGBTQ+ community to network, gather, and socialize. With a fun and casual atmosphere, this is also an opportunity to meet like-minded people away from those lovely apps. Allies are welcome and encouraged to join.

“I have had the pleasure of visiting Victoria and Friends of Dorothy a number of times over the pandemic. Rudy and his team have built a beautiful space there where we have streamed our QUSIC series from,” shares Dustyn Baulkham, creator of the MX. and CEO of Rebellious Unicorns Production Company Inc. “The MX. was popular in Kelowna before the pandemic and we are excited to welcome the 2SLGBTQ+ community and allies to Dorothy’s for our monthly networking event.”

The MX. first began in Kelowna back in 2018 as there was a strong need for the 2SLGBTQ+ community to gather. At the time there were no queer focused spaces and FruitCake, Rebellious Unicorns 2SLGBTQ+ nightclub take over, was the only consistent event happening for our community. Having worked with Dorothy’s in both locations in the past it only made sense that we expand with them into Victoria.

Tickets are $12+GST in advance and $15 at the door - tickets include your first drink and snacks. Space is available on a first-come-first-serve basis. Students are $6+GST in advance and $8 at the door. Valid Student ID required.

About Rebellious Unicorns

Founded in 2017, Rebellious Unicorns is a 100% LGBT2Q+ owned events, broadcasting and media production company, dedicated to leading positive change in the Okanagan and curating inclusive events, experiences, and programming that bring people together. Rebellious Unicorns has produced a variety of in-person events for the LGBT2Q+ community and allies, including the drag-focused extravaganza, FruitCake, and the business social, the MX. One of RUPC’s signature events, Peak Pride, is a winter pride festival held at mountain resorts in BC such as Big White, SilverStar, Sun Peaks, and RED Mountain Resort, attracting hundreds of attendees from Western Canada and the Pacific Northwest.

With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Rebellious Unicorns’ focus altered drastically when our team launched an online streaming service called Unicorns.LIVE. Unicorns.LIVE offers a platform for various types of entertainment by a diverse collection of creators. The service provides opportunities for participating artists and creators to be compensated for their work along with offering performance opportunities to those who have been adversely affected by the pandemic.

“This company was founded with one goal in mind: to create new, welcoming and inclusive opportunities for people to gather and celebrate,” says founder Dustyn Baulkham. “The pandemic brought about significant changes — we’re no longer just an events company."

Rebellious Unicorns produces Unicorns.LIVE, Unicorn Booth, Peak Pride, QUSIC, FruitCake, the MX., Voices Unheard, Dirty Mutter, Cub Crawl, and Sunset Sessions.

About Friends of Dorothy Lounge

Named as a nod to queer history when identifying as a ‘friend of Dorothy’ was a discreet way to identify as gay, Friends Dorothy Lounge Kelowna & Victoria now stand as physical testaments to the progress of the LGBTQ2S+ community in becoming unabashedly visible and proud. Opened by Rudy Tomazic in 2020, Friends of Dorothy Lounge Kelowna is the very first LGBTQ2S+ bar in the entire Okanagan, and both locations now exist as hubs of queer art, performance & community, serving food, drink, and fabulous energy to everyone who visits. There truly is no place like Dorothy’s!
